Defined Perils vs All Risks

Understanding the jargon is key to knowing what you are actually buying.

🔦

Defined Perils

The "Flashlight"

Only covers specific events listed in the policy. If it's not on the list, it's not covered.

  • Covered: Fire, Collision, Overturning
  • Excluded: Dropping, Theft, Water Damage
💡

All Risks

The "Floodlight"

Covers any external cause of loss or damage unless specifically excluded.

  • Covered: Almost everything
  • Excluded: Wear & Tear, War, Nuclear

Common Policy Questions

What is 'Defined Perils' vs 'All Risks'?
Think of 'Defined Perils' like a flashlight—it only covers what is on the list (fire, collision, overturning). 'All Risks' is like a floodlight—it covers everything unless it is specifically excluded (like wear and tear).
Does insurance cover packing my own boxes?
Typically, no. If you pack your own boxes ('PBO'), insurance will usually covers loss of the entire box (theft) or damage if the truck crashes, but NOT breakage inside the box. For full breakage cover, professional packing is usually required.
What is the 'Pairs and Sets' clause?
If you damage one chair of a matching dining set, standard policies might only pay for that one chair. 'Pairs and Sets' coverage ensures you are compensated for the reduced value of the entire set.
How is the cost calculated?
Premiums are typically 1.0% - 2.5% of your total declared value. For a $50,000 home contents policy, expect to pay between $500 and $1,250 depending on the level of cover.

Don't risk your move.

Most accidents happen during loading and unloading—times often excluded by cheaper policies.
