Essential Guide

Carrier Liability vs
Moving Insurance

The #1 mistake Australians make is assuming their removalist automatically covers damaged goods. They don't.

The "It Won't Happen to Me" Trap

A truck moves your life's possessions over 1,000km of bumpy roads. It brakes hard, turns corners, and hits potholes. Even with expert packing, shifting occurs. Without insurance, you are relying on luck.

Know the Difference

Liability is NOT Insurance

DEFAULT

Carrier Liability

Provided by most removalists

  • No coverage for accidents
  • No coverage for weather/rain
  • Only covers proven negligence
  • Payouts capped (e.g. $200 per item)

"Sorry, we took 'all care', but accidents happen."

RECOMMENDED

Moving Insurance

Third-party protection

  • Covers accidental damage
  • Covers fire, flood, collision
  • No negligence proof needed
  • Full replacement value payouts

The Financials Don't Lie

Your Inventory Value

Insurance Cost

Is it worth risking $75,000 to save the cost of a coffee a day for a year? Most policies cost less than the price of replacing a single sofa.

Common Questions

Doesn't my removalist have insurance?
They have insurance for THEIR business (public liability, vehicle), but this rarely extends to covering your goods. They typically offer 'Carrier Liability' which only covers damage if you can prove negligence.
Does my home and contents policy cover moving?
Some policies offer limited 'goods in transit' cover, but often only for fire, flood, and collision—not accidental damage (dropping something). Always check your Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).
Is insurance mandatory?
No, it is optional. However, reputable removalists (like AFRA members) are required to OFFER it to you or advise you where to get it because the risk is significant.
How much does it cost?
Typically 1.5% - 3% of your goods' total value. For $50,000 of contents, insurance might cost $750-$1,500. Comparing this to the risk of losing everything, it's a small price for peace of mind.

Ready to protect your move?

Don't wait until the truck is in the driveway. Insurance usually needs to be booked at least 48 hours before pickup.
